A Look at Camaro Then & Now (50th Anniversary: 1967-2017)

camaro then and now

It’s hard to believe, but the Camaro turns 50 this year! From the first generation Camaro in 1967 to today’s sixth generation model, this classic American car has been through countless tweaks, changes, upgrades and modifications.

Let’s look at how the legendary Camaro has progressed since its inception in 1967.

50th anniversary of the camaro

  • First Generation (1967-1969)

The very first Camaro rolled off Chevy’s production lines in 1967. No major changes in design occurred until 1970, giving the 1st generation just three model years, the fewest for any Camaro generation. Engine sizes ranged from the 140 HP L26 inline 6 to the 430 HP COPO V8. For only $2,466, you could’ve had a 1967 2-door Camaro coupe!

  • Second Generation (1970-1981)

The 2nd generation Camaro was redesigned with sophisticated lines, in order to keep pace with European sportscars. Engine output between 155 HP and 375 HP, and the price tag was just $2,839.

  • Third Generation (1982-1992)

Chevy engineers took a dramatic turn with the 3rd generation Camaro. This model looked nothing like its predecessors, while the under-hood performance (up to 270 HP) fell short for some Camaro enthusiasts. The average price for an entry-level 1982 Camaro was about $3,500.

  • Fourth Generation (1993-2002)

The 90s and early 2000s saw a noticeable power surge, as the 1993 Camaro SS produced 325 HP. A new F-body platform and a new convertible model highlighted the 4th generation production run. For a new 2-door Camaro coupe in 1993, buyers could expect to pay $13,399.

  • Fifth Generation (2010-2015)

Following a 7-year hiatus, the Camaro was back in a big way in 2010. The 5th generation Camaro in 2010 had a base price around $22,000, and the SS had up to 426 HP. But it wasn’t the price or horsepower that made the 5th generation memorable; the car’s retro style mirrored the classic 1969 Camaro.

  • Sixth Generation (2016-present)

With plenty of power to spare – the 6.2L LT4 V8 6th generation Camaro boasts 650 HP – Chevy’s latest Camaro continues the brand’s proud racing heritage. A base model 2018 Camaro is under $26,000, while a high-tech redesigned interior cabin makes it more than worth the price tag.
