Did you know that the Mustang we know and love today was almost called something else entirely? Would it have the same ring if it were a Torino or Cougar? Probably not.
We agree with Ford, the name Mustang implies the freedom of wide open space, and it's "American As All Hell." So why not celebrate the American tradition of driving a Mustang by installing the best Mustang mods?
Americans love working on their cars. We want to make them faster, stronger, and a beast that owns the road. We also want to make our cars custom to fit our personal style.
So let's get started talking about some of the best Mustang mods that are available for owners today.
If you want a more aggressive stance for your car then think about putting lowering springs on. Now your car will have a custom stance and an overall unique look.
The lower stance is going to give your car a lower center of gravity. This will give you improved performance when it comes to owning those tight turns on either the track or back country road.
One piece of advice your mother probably told you was to always buy the best quality shoes you can afford. A better quality shoe is going to provide a better build and much-needed support, so why wouldn’t you?
Well, the same goes for the wheels and tires on your Mustang. Now we aren't saying there is anything wrong with the stock wheels and tires - those are great for average use. But putting custom wheels on your Mustang will give your car a very unique look. You can also adjust the way your car performs by changing the diameter and width of the rims you choose.
Choosing different tires with a different rubber compound will change the way your Mustang grips the road. If you plan on doing some track time, this is vital for getting the most performance out of your car. The possibilities are near endless when it comes to tire customization.
There may not be any strings under your hood, but your Mustang needs some tuning for it to perform to its peak abilities. Why do you need to tune it? Shouldn't it come that way right off the production line?
Of course, it should! This isn't the case though. Thanks to emissions and safety standards, car manufacturers like Ford produce cars with ECMs that controls the performance of the car.
The ECM will balance fuel economy, emissions standards, and performance. You don't have to settle for this though.
Look for a company that sells preprogrammed aftermarket ECMs. Or you can look for a kit that allows you to reprogram the ECM in your Mustang right at home.
If you decide to supercharge your car, we highly recommend that you also do the previous mod of re-tuning your ECM. A supercharger is going to give your engine a serious boost in power, which your ECM isn't prepared to factor for.
A supercharger can add up to 100 horsepower to the performance of your Mustang. It works by connecting to your engine via a belt. Talk about a boost in performance!
For those who are old school and fans of shifting into gear, you need a short shifter. The next time you get behind the wheel of your manual, pay attention to the distance your shifter travels from one gear to the next.
You can improve the performance of your car by reducing this distance. The way a short shifter reduces this distance is by moving the pivot point of the shifter upwards.
While you are focused on your shifter, take this opportunity to change out the stock knob. Don’t think this is a must though - it won't add power or increase performance.
What it will do though is add some personality and improve the looks of the interior of your car. There are a ton of shapes, colors, and styles available for you to choose from.
No, we aren't talking about that kind of lighting up. Thanks to the advancement of LED lighting, custom lights on your Mustang are a must.
You can do this by replacing the stock headlights and taillights with custom aftermarket lights that have LED accenting. Or, if you’re feeling bold, you could install your own custom lighting behind the grill, in the wheels, or under the hood of the car.
Don't stop on the outside of the car though. Look for places on the inside of your Mustang where LED lighting could enhance the look of your car. You could add lighting to the footwells, cup holders, or doors. Remember that this should be accent lighting, and less is more.
Don't forget to think about quality and color when buying your LED lighting. As for color, you can go with a clean and crisp white. Or you could match your lighting to the color of your car.
Better quality LEDs tend to have a brighter and more vibrant color. But this also depends on the style of LED light you buy.
There are some LEDs that specifically give off a softer glow. These will work great if you are looking for more ambient light.
So you want to change the sound of your car, but you aren't quite ready to commit and invest in a full exhaust replacement. What you need instead is a resonator delete kit. This component isn't quite bolt on, but pretty darn close. All it takes are some common tools you should have in your garage and about an hour of your time.
It's an X pipe that has a cut and clamp type of installation. What it will do is replace your Mustang's stock resonator.
What you get by doing this mod is better flow through the exhaust. You will also notice a tone that is more aggressive.
There are two parts to changing the air intake of your engine. The first is to replace your air filter with a higher quality aftermarket air filter.
An aftermarket filter will get the air cleaner and improve the airflow into your engine. Both of these things improve the performance of your engine.
The second part of this is to reduce the temperature of the air going to the engine. The colder air gets, the denser it becomes.
When air is dense, you can pack more air molecules into the same amount of available space. This results in larger combustion that creates more energy within your engine.
The trick to doing this mod right is to buy the right cold air intake. You want one that takes in cool air. You don't want one that takes in the warm air of the engine bay.
Take a look around your car; you are missing some painted to match covers for the interior, exterior, and engine bay.
When it comes to dressing up the engine bay, you can buy an airbox cover, coil covers, engine cover, and radiator shroud. This will give your engine bay a custom, clean, and uniform look.
Afterward, move to the interior of your Mustang to complete this look. Install speaker trim, door trim, sill plates, and vent covers. Now the interior of your Mustang will look extremely unique to you.
So you do all of this work under the hood to boost your Mustang's performance. You want to show it off right?
One of the most common Mustang mods is just for that purpose. Install hood struts so that you can prop your hood open and have a clean open look. The stock hood prop bar is no longer necessary to keep the hood open.
One thing that many owners forget about when modding is to beef up their brakes. When you boost the performance and horsepower of your car, you also need to increase your stopping power.
So replace your pads, rotors, and calipers with their performance counterparts. Be careful though, you don't want racing brakes on your daily driver. These are going to give you too much performance which will cause your rotors to wear out fast.
The best Mustang mods do double duty. They enhance the looks of your car and improve performance. But that doesn't mean these are the only mods you should do.
Sometimes, you just want your car to look a certain way. That makes the vanity mods well worth it.
